assumption: something is taken for granted as being true

boom town: a town that grows and quickly becomes wealthy

engineer:person skilled in a branch of engineering, i.e. mining or construction

entrepreneurial: creating new business(es)

fiscal agent:a person who works with stocks and bonds as a career

flats:part of town where the residential area is located

 

gas range: type of stove

gang plank: a bridge used from a pier to a boat

generator: apparatus for producing gas or steam

geologist: a person who studies the earth and rock formations

 

heritage: the culture, property, and characteristics of past times

hierarchy: a system of persons ordered by class -middle-class, upper-class

incorporated: to form a corporation

integrity: honesty, virtue

igneous rocks: rocks produced by volcanic action

 

 

legend: a story handed down from the past based on past events

limited company: company that is incorporated

live theatre: Theatre show that has live actors rather than a screen

mining engineer: engineer that is specifically educated to work in the mining industry, works on the machinery in mines

mineral claims: land claim pertaining to minerals

 

 

 

pantry: room in which provisions, crockery, cutlery etc. are kept

promotion: to further a cause

prospector: one who searches or explores a region for eg. gold

prosperity: success, good fortune, wealth

 

 

reception: referring to radio, receiving of broadcast signals

 

sawgrass flats: type of grassy area

shareholders: a person who owns a share or shares of stock in a company

strike: employees' organized refusal to work until grievance is remedied

subsidiary: owned or controlled by another company

syndicate: a combination of persons to run a business

ten stamp mill: Type of mill used in early mining

 

 

Union recognition: Where an organized union recognizes a group of workers

ventures: a risky course of action

wood furnace: type of heat source

Wellsians: name given to people who reside in Wells, locals
